Unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand these past few weeks, you’ve no doubt heard of ChatGPT, the chatbot developed by OpenAI which launched in November 2022. Said simply, you can ask the AI powered bot questions, to write codes, papers, letters and so on and it gives human-like answers to your queries. The chatbot is, in the company’s own words, “[trained to] interact in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.” In other words, it’s revolutionary. Understandably ChatGPT has tech industry stakeholders both excited and nervous about the growing power of AI, the potential direction it can take internet search as well as what it could mean for millions of jobs. It also has some educators worried as some universities have already banned it on their campuses.
Running the technology behind the most exciting thing to happen in tech in years, is OpenAI Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati. As if that role isn’t enough to keep her busy, the Albanian born beauty also leads the team behind DALL-E, which uses AI to create artwork based on prompts.

To have accomplished so much at just thirty five years old, Murati has clearly not allowed her age to stand in the way of her ambition or to cloud her abilities.
She Makes Bold Career Moves
She’s had an impressive career that’s been on an upward trajectory since she graduated from Dartmouth University where she earned her bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. Her resume demonstrates that she isn’t afraid to make career leaps and change industries, companies or roles as she expands her experience. She counts stints at venerated investment bank, Goldman Sachs (summer analyst), Zodiac Aerospace (one year as an Advanced Concepts Engineer), Tesla (3 years as Senior Product Manager, Model X), computer hardware manufacturer, Leap Motion (2 years as VP of Product & Engineering) under her belt, before landing at OpenAI where she has had three positions, including two big promotions, in five years.

When asked to name some limitations of ChatGPT, where other executives may be tempted to obfuscate challenging facts, Murati plainly admitted to Time Magazine that the chatbot “may make up facts” and expressed her concerns about its potential for misuse by bad actors.

You won’t find out a whole lot about Murati if you’re looking, she rarely gives interviews, appears on panels, magazines or podcasts. The few clips or interviews she has given have been related to her work on ChatGPT. Though her instagram account is private and her LinkedIn profile short and sweet, she does use Twitter to post updates on their work at OpenAI as well as exciting industry news. Sometimes it’s enough to let your work do the talking.
Expect to hear more from Mira Murati as ChatGPT continues to make news. Or then again, maybe don’t.
